Mayville State Division of Education faculty Dr. Yvonne Cannon, Associate Professor of Education; Dr. Ann Willeson, Professor of Education; and Dr. Cortney Schuley, Assistant Professor of Education; represented Mayville State University at the 2026 North Dakota Literacy Summit, highlighting the university’s commitment to preparing future educators with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver effective, evidence-based literacy instruction. The summit explored key topics such as dyslexia, adolescent literacy, early childhood literacy, and the Science of Reading and provided participants with access to current research, innovative practices, and emerging trends in literacy education.

A particularly valuable aspect of the experience was the opportunity for Mayville State faculty to learn alongside preschool through grade 12 educators, administrators, and literacy leaders from across North Dakota. Engaging directly with P-12 stakeholders provided firsthand insight into the literacy challenges, successes, and evolving needs of today’s classrooms.

These collaborative discussions help bridge the gap between research and practice while strengthening partnerships between higher education and school districts throughout the state. The knowledge and perspective gained through this professional learning experience will enhance teacher preparation programs at Mayville State, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to support literacy achievement for all learners.
