Working together to provide a sense of belonging
I’ve said it over and over again, but it’s worth repeating. At Mayville State University, “Personal Service” is more than two words that appear in our official school seal. It is a commitment that guides how we support our students every day. We believe that each student deserves the opportunity to succeed, and when challenges arise for them, faculty, staff, coaches, teammates, and classmates work together to help make that success possible.
One of the reasons I chose to come to Mayville State is that I recognized the unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students who are striving to achieve their goals and create bright futures. At Mayville State, personal connections matter. It’s a place where I am able to know the students by their names, and where faculty and staff are highly invested in helping each individual succeed. We embrace Mayville State’s tradition of Personal Service, knowing that a college education can transform lives. I am committed to the university’s devotion to empowering students to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.
Our dedication to ensuring that students can fully experience college life makes Mayville State special. We strive to help make sure students graduate while also participating in the activities that are important to them, whether that means competing in athletics, performing in music ensembles, engaging in student organizations, or serving in leadership roles across campus. When obstacles stand in the way, our campus community looks for solutions rather than barriers.
That spirit of support was in full force as football players arrived on campus and checked in for fall camp on August 3. For many student athletes and their families, move-in day is the beginning of a new season filled with excitement, anticipation, and opportunity. It can also be an emotional transition as students prepare to begin or continue their college journey.
To help make students and their families feel welcome, a group of dedicated community volunteers and members of the Gridiron Club organized and served a meal on the evening of August 3. These generous individuals donated the food, prepared it, cooked it, and welcomed guests with warm hospitality. Their efforts created an opportunity for families, students, coaches, and community members to gather and connect before the start of a busy football season. The women’s basketball team, who were in the building, were invited to join in the meal and socializing as well.
Acts of kindness like these may seem simple, but they have a lasting impact. They send a powerful message to students and their families: Our community cares and provides a sense of belonging for students. They demonstrate support for our students that extends far beyond the classroom and athletic fields. They reflect the values of generosity, service, and a genuine desire to help others succeed that have long defined Mayville State and the surrounding communities.
The volunteers who provided the meal exemplify the partnership between Mayville State University and the community. Their willingness to give of their time, talents, and resources helped to create a welcoming environment for students who have traveled from near and far to pursue their education at Mayville State.
As another academic year begins, we extend our sincere appreciation to these volunteers and to all who contribute to the student experience at Mayville State. Whether assisting a student through a challenge, mentoring a young person, supporting campus events, or offering a warm welcome, these efforts make a difference.
At Mayville State, personal service is not the responsibility of any one individual or department. It is a shared commitment embraced by an entire community. Together, we go above and beyond to create opportunities, remove obstacles, and help students achieve their goals. The hospitality shown to our football players and their families, as well as the women’s basketball players, on August 3 is a wonderful example of that commitment in action, and a reminder of what makes Mayville State an extraordinary place to learn, grow, and succeed.
